Simple Traditional Gudi Padwa Rangoli Designs for Flats
A flat doorstep is often only 60 cm deep, so keep the design small and clear. Draw a 40 cm gudi with a short pole, a small triangle of silk and a round kalash, then add one neem sprig on each side. Use a bangle to mark the kalash and a ruler for the pole. Fill the cloth in saffron or green, and outline everything in white so it shows on light tiles. Place two diyas at the sides in the evening. The whole design needs about 150 g of powder and 15 minutes, and it keeps well for the day if no one steps on it.
Common questions
What is the most loved rangoli Gudi Padwa families draw?
A gudi pole with silk and kalash is the most loved theme. Add a swastik, sun or Sanskar Bharti strokes around it. Two small gudis on either side of a lotus suit wide entrances.
How do I make an easy rangoli for ugadi?
Draw a mini kalash with three mango leaves or a 7 by 7 dot star. Both take 10 to 15 minutes. Keep to three colours like yellow, green and red.
Are Ugadi and Gudi Padwa rangoli designs the same?
They are made for the same new year day. Gudi Padwa designs show the gudi and Sanskar Bharti strokes, while Ugadi designs lean on chukki muggulu, mango leaves and the pachadi pot.
What are traditional ugadi rangoli designs with dots?
They are muggulu drawn on grids like 9 to 5 or 13 to 7, with a kalash, mango leaves or flowers in the centre. Rice flour is used for the lines and haldi kumkum for the colour. Our kolam designs page has more grids.
Is there a gudi padwa rangoli design simple enough for 15 minutes?
Yes. A flower chain border or a sun in the corner takes about 12 to 15 minutes. These suit flats where the doorstep is narrow, and both work for Ugadi too.
What colours suit gudi padwa rangoli designs?
Saffron, green, yellow and maroon match the silk of the gudi. Copper or brown works for the kalash. Use white powder for outlines so colours stand apart.
