Diya rangoli designs bring together the two things every Diwali home has: colour on the floor and light. A lamp shape is easy to draw, and a real diya placed beside it makes the whole design glow at night.
Here are beautiful easy diya rangoli designs for Diwali in six groups: simple lamps, lamps with flowers, lamps on dot grids, designs around real diyas, poster style pictures and big centre pieces. If you only have ten minutes, an easy diya rangoli for Diwali can be one lamp and a ring of dots. In Marathi homes the lamp is called a diva, and in Hindi a deepak, so you may know these as diva rangoli or deepak rangoli. Each picture gives the time, level and size.

- Rim: draw a flat oval across the top of the half circle.
- Flame: make a teardrop with the back of a spoon. Fill yellow first, then put a small orange drop inside.
- Glow: tap a little light yellow through a tea strainer around the flame.
- Outline: finish with a thin white line. It makes the lamp stand out on any floor.
Colour, Time and Safety with Real Diyas
| Design size | Colour needed | Time |
|---|---|---|
| Small, 35 to 50 cm | 100 to 250 g | 10 to 20 minutes |
| Medium, 60 to 80 cm | 400 to 600 g | 30 to 45 minutes |
| Big, 1.2 to 1.5 metres | 1.5 to 2.5 kg | 1.5 to 2.5 hours |
- Put real diyas on a small steel lid or leaf so oil does not soak into the powder.
- Keep lit diyas at the edge, not where people walk.
- Keep children’s clothes and dupattas away from the flame, and never leave lamps alone.
- Wash hands after, as many shop colours are synthetic.

Common questions
What makes beautiful diya rangoli designs for Diwali stand out?
A bright flame against a dark floor, a clean white outline and real diyas placed nearby. Keep the flame yellow with an orange core, and use gold or deep red for the bowl.
Which easy diya rangoli designs can kids make?
A single lamp with a ring of dots, or a 3 by 3 dot lamp. Draw the outline for them in chalk and let them fill the colours. Keep it under 40 cm so they do not get tired. More ideas are on our rangoli designs for kids page.
How do I make diya rangoli designs with dots?
Start with a 7 to 4 grid: 7 dots in the middle row, reducing to 4. Join the lower rows into a bowl and the top dots into a flame. Then fill and outline in white.

You can, but the oil will stain the colour. Put each diya on a small steel lid, a betel leaf or a plain circle left in the design.
How many small diya rangoli designs do I need for a home?
One at the main door, one at the pooja place and one on each balcony or window is enough for most flats. Add a path of lamps if you have a courtyard. For door ideas see door rangoli designs.
