Laxmi charan, also called Laxmi paduka, are the most loved part of any Laxmi Pujan rangoli. They must always point into the home, as if she is walking in from the door toward the puja place.
- Make a loose fist and press the side of your hand lightly in wet chalk to mark the foot shape. Or use a small foot stencil.
- Fill with red kumkum or a mix of gerua and red rangoli powder.
- Add five toes with fingertip dots, smallest toe outside.
- Outline in white with a cone, and put a small swastik or dot on each sole.
- Space the pairs about one step apart, starting at the threshold and ending near the kalash or puja chowk.
Some families in Maharashtra and Gujarat draw the feet with rice flour paste, which stays put for days. Kids love this part, so let them fill the toes.

Where to Make the Laxmi Pooja Rangoli
Whether you call it Lakshmi Pooja or Laxmipujan as Marathi homes do, laxmipujan rangoli designs usually go in two or three spots. Lakshmi pooja rangoli designs near the chowki can be bigger than the one at the door.
- Main door: the charan trail and a small kalash or lotus at the threshold.
- In front of the puja chowki: a square or round design about the width of the chowki, with a lotus centre where the kalash will stand.
- Office or shop: many traders do Chopda Pujan here, so a kalash and coins design near the account books suits it.
- Corners: four small lotus designs in the corners of the puja room look neat. See corner rangoli designs for shapes.
Common questions
How do you make Laxmi feet in rangoli?
Mark the foot with the side of your fist in chalk, fill it with red kumkum or rangoli powder, add five fingertip dots for toes and outline in white. Always point the toes toward the inside of the house. Space the pairs one step apart.
Which rangoli is best for Laxmi Pujan?
A kalash on a pink lotus, with Laxmi charan walking toward it from the door, is the classic rangoli for Laxmi Pujan. It has every symbol of the night: welcome, wealth and purity. A 70 cm version takes about 45 minutes.
What are simple Laxmi rangoli designs for beginners?
Start with a single lotus on a 7 to 4 dot grid, a conch on a lotus, or a short trail of footprints with a swastik at the door. These easy mahalaxmi rangoli ideas take 15 to 20 minutes and need only red, pink, yellow and white. Add coins later if you have time.
Can I draw Laxmi mata's face in rangoli?
You can, but most families prefer symbols because a face is hard to draw well and is easily stepped on. Footprints, lotus, kalash, coins and an owl or elephant pair carry the same meaning and look graceful.
What is a kamal rangoli design?
Kamal means lotus. Kamal rangoli designs show an open lotus with 8, 12 or 16 petals, usually pink with a yellow centre, because Laxmi sits on a lotus. They suit Laxmi Pujan, Varalakshmi Vratham and Sharad Purnima.
Are Laxmi rangoli designs with dots easy?
Yes. A dot grid helps you keep the lotus and kalash symmetrical without measuring. Try a 9 to 5 grid for a lotus and a 7 to 4 grid for a small kalash. See more grids on our dot rangoli designs page.
