Swastik rangoli designs are the first rangoli most of us learn, because the swastik (saathiya) is drawn before every pooja, at every new door and on every account book. It stands for good luck and well-being, and its four arms point to the four directions.

The arms of a Hindu swastik turn clockwise, with the bends going to the right as you look at it. Always add the four dots, one in each quarter. You can combine a swastik with diyas from our diya rangoli designs or footprints from Laxmi rangoli designs.

- Mark the centre with a dot.
- Draw a plus sign with a scale. Keep both lines the same length.
- From the end of each line, draw a short arm turning clockwise, so the top arm bends right, the right arm bends down, the bottom bends left and the left bends up.
- Add one dot in each of the four quarters.
- Outline in white or gold, then add a circle or lotus around if you like.
If your arms keep coming out uneven, use a dot grid. Make a 7 by 7 grid and use the middle row and column for the plus.
Common Mistakes and How to Fix Them
- Arms of different lengths: measure each arm with the same scale mark, or use a dot grid.
- Arms turning the wrong way: check the top arm. It should bend to your right.
- Thick, blotchy lines: your powder is too coarse or damp. Sieve it and keep your fingers low.
- Forgetting the dots: the four dots complete the symbol. Add them before you start the border.
Colours and Materials
| Use | Material | Amount for 40 cm |

| Doorstep | Red and white rangoli powder | 100 g |
| Festival | Powder with 4 or 5 colours | 200 to 250 g |

A tea strainer gives a soft colour fill, and a cone made of paper gives very thin lines for the outline.
