- Draw rings with a plate or string. Trace a katori, then a steel plate, or tie chalk to a string and turn it around the centre.
- Fill one ring at a time. Start from the centre. Put one shape on each guide line, then fill the gaps.
- Finish with dots. A ring of white dots around the outside hides small mistakes and makes the edge sharp.

- Turn your body, not the design. Walk around the mandala so every part is drawn from the same angle.
- Work in opposite pairs: draw the top petal, then the bottom, then left and right.
- Use a spoon tip to push stray powder back into line.

Common questions
What is the difference between a mandala and a normal round rangoli?
Every mandala is round, but not every round rangoli is a mandala. A mandala grows in rings from one centre, with the same shape repeated around each ring. A normal round rangoli can have a single big picture, like a peacock, inside a circle.
How do I make a simple mandala rangoli for Diwali quickly?
Keep it to three rings: a small flower centre, a ring of eight petals and a ring of dots. Use orange, yellow and white. It takes about 20 minutes and leaves space to place diyas around it.
Can I make mandala rangoli designs on paper first?
Yes, and it helps a lot. Draw on black chart paper with the same powder, or with chalk and colour pencils. Once you know the ring order, the floor version is much faster.
Which tools help to draw a round mandala?
A bangle for the centre, a katori and a steel plate for small rings, and a string tied to chalk for big rings. A spoon tip and a paper cone help with fine details.
Can I make mandala rangoli designs with flowers?
Yes. Use rose petals for the centre, marigold petals for the middle rings and leaves for the outer rays. Make it just before the pooja, as petals stay fresh for only a few hours. Sprinkle a little water to keep them bright.
