- Use a bangle for the garbo pot and lotus centre.
- Use a comb to draw neat lines on the chunri border.
- Sieve gold or yellow through a tea strainer for a soft glow around the kalash.
- Keep kumkum and haldi in small bowls for dots and toes.

Making It Last Through Garba Nights
Garba crowds walk close to rangoli. Put a ring of diyas or flower pots around it as a guard. Powder mixed with a little fine sand stays put better in wind. For a flower rangoli for navratri, sprinkle a little water on the petals at night so they stay fresh till morning.
Common questions
What rangoli is made on ghatasthapana?
A round or square base with a kalash, mango leaves and a ring for barley sprouts is common. It is drawn under or next to the clay pot on the first day of Navratri.
Which colours should I use for navratri rangoli designs?
Many families follow the colour of each day, which changes every year. Keep the outline in white or yellow and fill the main shape in that day’s colour, so one design can be changed daily.
What is a simple navratri rangoli for beginners?
A nine-petal flower, a diya with a swastik, or kumkum footprints. Each takes 5 to 15 minutes and needs only two or three colours. On busy days, keep your navratri rangoli simple and add a fresh row of dots or petals. Our easy rangoli designs page has more.
Can I make a Durga devi face rangoli?
A face is very hard to make neat in powder. Most families use her symbols instead: trishul, lotus, red chunri, lion and the Devi’s footprints. These are respectful and look clean.
What is drawn for Ashtami kanya pujan?
Small footprints pointing inside, a lotus, and simple plate shapes in front of where the girls sit. Red and yellow are the usual colours.
How big should a Navratri rangoli be?
Daily designs can be 30 to 45 cm. For garba nights, Ashtami and Navami, make 80 cm to 1 metre if you have space.
